One of the activities organized under the European Cooperative Programme for plant genetic resources (ECPGR) is the collation of European central databases (ECCDBs) of germplasm holdings across European collections for specific genera or species. An early collation for Pisum was initiated some 20 years ago by Peter Matthews et al. (1) but the exercise remained a work in progress. Over the past year this task has been reactivated, an undertaking which was greatly facilitated by development of National Inventories as part of the European search catalogue EURISOC (2). This system has been developed with close reference to the ECCDBs with respect to common data fields and descriptions e.g. multicrop passport descriptors developed by FAO/IPGRI.

The EPDB contains details of holdings from 43 collections from 26 European countries and holds a total of 32503 entries (Appendix 1). The details of collections from JIC, INRA France and VIR Russia were compiled in 2008 making the EPDB the most up to date point of reference for European germplasm holdings (3).

A further phase of development of the EPDB is planned whereby the database will be extended to include passport data from key Pisum collections from other parts of the world. This work is being planned as an activity of PeaGRIG (4).
